So, I've been really busy with the paint brushes, pencils and pens lately, and I'm pretty surprised at what I'm able to do after not concentrating on drawing AT ALL for many, many years. I'm delightfully surprised, actually. Here is my version of the Statue of Liberty. I got to working on this after reflecting on some words I posted on my Facebook page on the 4th of July, Independence Day. I basically said, "if you don't like what's going on in this country, get the fuck out". lol
We are NOT the worst out there! And if we're so frickin' bad, why is everybody and their mama trying to come here???!  While America is not perfect, it's the best damn place in the world to be a free spirit who wants to live life on your own damn terms, especially if you're a woman.  It's also better than 50 other places I could name off the top of my head right this second...

The Statue of Liberty represents to me Freedom, Pursuit of Happiness, Expression, Independence and more. I am a DAMN proud American, and yeah, if you're one of the bitch asses here enjoying all the freedoms and yet complaining, go back to where your people came from! Mine are from here, as far back as I can trace it, and I'm proud of that. I know that on one hand, this looks like a school project. LOL! But ya know, I love it. I think it's pretty neat! And hey, it came from something that I really feel - pride in being an American. ;)

I took some pics as I wandered over by the East edge of midtown Manhattan yesterday. These are my favorites (also posted on New York Excitement)

So, I've stopped being lazy and have really been playing around with the pencils and sketch pad lately. Although I haven't been in the habit of drawing much these past years, it does come right to me, just like riding a bike! I really need to stay in the habit, because if I'm able to turn out decent pieces with a mostly unpracticed hand, imagine what I would be able to create if I did practice my drawing more!

I did this pencil drawing and posted it on DeviantArt.com. I'm "NinjaDiva" over there.... lol.

I'm pleased with how this first piece turned out, and may do a few more versions of it, perhaps playing around with some color. I also plan to do an entire series of these "OM" pictures. This first one has spawned a ton of ideas on the theme. Hopefully they will be good! ;)

Weekend Project: Learning to Draw a Hand Holding a Gun....

Among all the other projects I have going on, I also have this strong desire to write a comic strip.  I already have my main character (modeled after myself, lol!), concept and a few story lines, and I'm trying to learn how to improve my drawing so that I can do all my own illustration.  After rough sketching out a strip sequence earlier today, I realized that I really don't know how to draw a gun.  Even harder?  Drawing a hand holding a gun.  It's a bit harder than you might think!  As the heavens are always on my side, I magically saw a gun on a poster in the subway on my way home (immediately AFTER drawing out the panes of my strip and realizing I didn't know how to do a hand with a gun, now, is that fate or what?).  A poster with nothing else except a giant gun on it!   SO random to see that just when I needed it.  I did a rough sketch of it before the train came:

I see that I still have some work to do on this.  The train came before I could get to the details.  To figure out how to draw a gun in a hand, I just Googled "gun in hand" and selected certain ones to sketch.  The first few are awful, but I think I will soon get it.  Practice, practice, practice!

I will practice this until I get it right.
Why do I need to be able to draw a gun in a hand?  Well, if and when you meet my character, you will understand why.  She's a bit of an avenging angel and she's got a whole lotta vigilante in her..... (in the crudely drawn panes at the top of this collage of my sketches, you can see part of what I'm trying to do.  I drew those panes before practicing gun drawing -click to enlarge)  When I do the finished, polished strip, trust me, it will look better than that one!  For real! ;)

A simple image edit

Stage 1 - I created a mirror image canvas from a piece of a snow scene photo

Stage 2 - to that canvas, I added some snowflakes and effects

Stage 3 - then I darkened it to really bring out some color

This now creates a cool backdrop that I can turn into a card or an advertisement. I can insert people, objects, overlay text, etc. The possibilities are endless.

The Fierce Java website 125 x 125 avatar

Snowboard Diva banner ad
You can guess where I got the background from. I just inserted my little snowboarder and mirror imaged it.

Quick clean up of the image and overlay of text. She was showing a weeeee bit too much on the bikini bottom. Had to fix that! ;)
